Food For Thought

Whoirun4 is an organization that pairs people with disabilities that prevent them from running and runners who, well, run. This is what they say about why they do what they do:

The mental and emotional encouragement for both runner and honorary runner is proving to be a whole new level of motivation and awareness. Runners are able to find a whole new sense of purpose in their running while sharing who they are running for and bringing awareness to diseases and disabilities of all types.

There are hundreds of runners waiting to be paired so check it out. I love this idea because any time people with disabilities can be visible and known, well, it’s better for everyone.

We’re still waiting for the price of exome sequencing to come down but we have done some genetic testing on specific genes that could tell us more about Aidan’s Epilepsy. The results could help steer his treatment. This article by Marilynn Marchione addresses a study at Baylor College of Medicine that was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

If you’ve been following the story of our home renovation and thought it was all over, you are wrong. With an incredible show of generosity and “getting it”, our builder has again volunteered to oversee another accessible renovation for a friend of ours. Read what people had to say about participating in the Bowie House project and then check out the Chanel 6 report on our friend Miles. And yes, Aidan gets a little air time too because he’s just that cute. You can get involved too. Giving a child freedom, safety, and independence in his own home is something you really don’t want to miss out on.

Finally, the TED talk I’ve been waiting for. Pretty please take 20 minutes to watch this. Bookmark it and come back later if you must but don’t miss it. “Children are dying. We can do better than this.”

What about you? What have you been reading, watching, learning?

I'd love to hear from you...
